I used to believe that everyone is important. Yes; that is true, but everyone isn’t important to everyone. What do I mean? The world is about seven billion people; seven billion people aren’t important to me or you. If you have to wait for everyone to endorse you, you’ll never make it to your promise land. And if you understand this point, you’ll carry on with your dream even if some within your corner, one way or the other don’t approve the road to your destination and to the destination itself. The reason I am emphasizing this point isn’t for you to be negative about people, but for you not to be offended and abandon your dream when you don’t get the expected response. When you begin your dream, positive responses hardly visit; they only start flooding in when you have a break. Rather than sit down to moan over disappointments, prove a point, not to anyone, but to yourself that you can make it happen. As you prove that point, don’t do it with bitterness; be excited that life has once again, challenged you to show your abilities. Show it with courage. Show it with every bit of your strength. Show it with all determination, and you’ll make it happen!
Who are the 10 people that you don’t need in your dream team?
The Inaccessible: when you have an idea, there are people who are in the position to advise you, brush up your idea to make it more acceptable, or maybe, make some form of inputs that will enhance the productivity of that idea. As you sit down early in the morning to ponder on whom to go to for the best advice or help, they’re the ones that first come to mind. But unfortunately, you’ll have to knock on their doors forever, and yet, they’ll never open. They’ve shut their minds, and so, your importunity only falls on deaf ears. For such people, get off that door, and stop being stupid. You can’t convince a person who has deliberately decided to discourage you from chasing your dream to come into your camp. The world is a competition; it takes only those with pure hearts of gold to put you on track where your abilities will be showcased. Stop being naïve; move on!
The Taunt and Time-Waster: the taunt is the wicked one. He never says he won’t help; he gives you the impression that he will do something, and keeps making promises; he keeps giving you dates until he steals away your time. If it takes six months to accomplish the dream, he takes five and half months from you, and then comes back to apologize with multiple excuses why he couldn’t help. He knew from the onset he wasn’t going to, but for reasons you can’t explain, he was a time thief.
The Satisfied: those who aren’t hungry aren’t self-driven, and because there isn’t an inner desire to push, they can’t move. Getting aboard your dream, a person that is satisfied with where he is means you’re going nowhere if you rely on him. Dreams die with satisfied people. It is only the hungry that will stand up and fight because he is angry. Players who are hungry score goals; those who are full either miss the net or score own goals.
The Fearful: there’s someone I know that if I were in the position to appoint leadership, and she applies for one, I will never approve it. Not because she isn’t a good person; in short, she is, but because she is too cautious not to displease everybody. She carries too much burdens on her head, doing what subordinates should do, because, according to her, she doesn’t want any trouble. To those who follow the rules, she overburdens, and to those who don’t, she allows to walk away stress-free. That is not leadership! Leadership must be bold and courageous. Leadership must be ready to offend and step on toes to make things happen. If you get aboard the fearful, your dream won’t go far, because they will be too scared to step on unfamiliar grounds. Familiarity won’t take you anywhere; that dream can only get to the summit when you’re willing and ready to climb to the height you’ve never attempted.
The Emotional: it is good to be emotional, but there is a junction that it becomes counter-productive. Your dream to send your child to the best university will die if you are too emotional to reprimand him when he isn’t doing well in school. Your dream of taking that business to the highest level will be cut short if you prefer to hire an incompetent family member that is searching for job rather than a qualified person. Your determination of giving a good presentation in that meeting will become illusion if you prefer attending that wedding to please your friend, with the time that should have been used for preparation. Don’t think I am wicked for saying these things; I am also emotional, but I try to strike a balance between common sense and emotion!
The indifferent: the indifferent has no bias, no prejudice, no preference, no partiality, but no interest. This sounds like good attributes, but when it gets to a point when decision must be made, the indifferent is unconcerned. The indifferent is unbothered by any conclusion made or inconclusiveness. With this kind of team member, you are heading nowhere, because they lack the firepower to help you get to where you want to be.
There is a time to take a stand for something even if you’re wrong. Taking a stand has nothing to do with who is right or wrong; it is an indication of great character and reliability. At least, by this, people will be able to know your beliefs, what you stand for, and what your value system is. But being indifferent puts you in a position where no one knows what to expect from you. You sincerely don’t need an indifferent person in your dream team.
The dodgy: the dodgy aren’t there to help; they’re there to look for loopholes that they can take advantage of. The dodgy are very smart and sometimes, lazy. They become advocates when it serves their selfish interests, and become dissidents when it doesn’t. They’re the first to complain when given responsibilities, and the first to praise when allowed to be indulgent. The dream of the team isn’t their concern; they’re just there to make ends meet or to satisfy other ulterior motives. They have no plan to stay, and wouldn’t admit that they’re on a short run. They escape when their curiosities are satisfied or not promptly satisfied. They are dodgy; you don’t need them in your dream team.
The careless: when you shuffle twenty random numbers, and ask the careless to arrange them in ascending or descending order, despite doing it many times, they will still not get it right because of attention deficiency. The careless does not pay attention to details. Because the heart is agitated for no sensible reasons, errors keep emanating. In certain environments, there is zero tolerance for carelessness. In a manufacturing company for instance, stepping out of the equation is unacceptable because you may end up with a product different from what the company offers. In the hospital, going off prescription or carelessly giving one patient’s medication to another might kill that person, and you know what the consequences will be. On a highway, driving outside the window of recommended speed limit due to carelessness may cause a devastating incident. No dream team should condone carelessness because it will cost you dearly.
The not-teachable: the world is aggressively advancing especially technologically. Everyday, new designs are on the shelves, as many companies war against themselves in the marketplace. Most of these new products are tempting to decision makers in many organizations because of the ease with which they make work faster and better. As these new designs are embraced, another challenge is getting the end users to adapt to these systems. Many end users, because they want to keep their jobs, are adjusting to new ways of doing things, but a few aren’t. Idiot-proof instructions make some people more idiotic because when it comes to technology, they pee on their pants. You can’t measure up with the pace of your competitors if you have in your team those who can’t adapt. That is a fact!
The too-know: the too-know may appear like the opposite of the not-teachable, but the fact is that they are both counter-productive to a dream team. The too-know tops the hierarchy of the not-teachable. The too-know does not listen to the teacher; in short, he teaches the teacher. The too-know writes endless stories but making no points, and without the points, you have no score.
While in school, I had a classmate that was too-know. He was the oldest in the class; same age with some of the lecturers, and maybe, that made him feel he knew more than them. Biochemistry is a course that requires short statements, more equations, and obviously, more structures, but my mate would hardly write the equations or draw the chemical structures; instead, he preferred writing long and endless stories. Of course, he kept failing. Your dream team will fail with people who know too much. Simple!
